Not content with providing Manchester with two of the best restaurants in the city (Volta and The Refuge) and club night Electric Chair, DJ duo the Unabombers’ latest venture, The Refuge Basement, is a subterranean space below the Principal Hotel destined to grow and evolve through an eclectic mix of one-off gigs. The first night announced at the Basement – a revival of Electric Chair – sold out in three minutes, but you’ve still got just about enough time to catch their second instalment. Presented by house and techno promoters, Zutekh, the venue will host none other than Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston’s A Love From Outer Space. Purveyors of chugging 120bmp records, the prolific pair deliver musical stylings ranging from post-punk to dub; taking inspiration from early influences as well as contemporary productions. Their selections demonstrate their long history with the leftfield and the obscure, ‘an oasis of slowness in a world of increasing velocity’, as Weatherall puts it. Don’t miss this one.
