This November, Grace Savage will perform Blind, a live theatre performance, at the Lowry Studio. Savage was the UK’s beatbox champion two years running, and has performed at Glastonbury, with her skills being praised by Will Smith and the Daily Telegraph. The theatre show Blind takes the form of a Victorian freak show -with added hip-hop. The autobiographical performance explores the aural influences she heard as a child, including rap, adverts and her mother’s often-dubious advice. Part of the show is a look at the misogyny prevalent in hip-hop, and the prejudice Savage has faced as a woman in the male-dominated world of beatboxing. Blind is produced by the Paper Birds, an experimental theatre company based in Leeds.
