Based in Leeds, Northern Ballet has built a strong reputation through its theatrical dance productions, bringing artistic directors from all over the world – starting from Laverne Meyer in 1969 and continuing through to today’s artistic director, David Nixon OBE. It isn’t regarded as one of Europe’s top ballet companies for nothing: last year Northern Ballet won the inaugural award for the Best Ballet Company at the Taglioni European Ballet Awards. Recent productions have included The Great Gatsby and Cinderella, and this year it is bringing George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984 to the stage. A piece considered to be a classic not just in its own genre but in modern literature, the thrilling narrative of a devastating slave-like society will no doubt make for a haunting and captivating dance perforamnce.
