This September, Perfume Genius will perform a rare gig in Manchester at Band on the Wall. Perfume Genius is the alias of American singer-songwriter Mike Hadreas. On his first two albums, Hadreas performed sparse piano ballads with lyrics touching on dark subjects such as his struggle with substance abuse. With his third album, which will be released later this year, Hadreas has undergone a radical change of direction. Collaborating with Adrian Utley of Portishead, he has crafted a sound closer to rock and electronica. Queen (listen below), the first single from the album, was heralded the music press, and his recent gig at Chats Palace in London was given a highly positive review by The Guardian, who called it ‘a quiet triumph’.
