Flying Lotus at Manchester Academy

When Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus, first announced a follow-up LP to 2012’s Until the Quiet Comes and subsequently a North American tour, most of us Brits sighed at the unknowing wait for his next UK tour (his now sold out gig at London’s Roundhouse aside). Since then, FlyLo has released Never Catch Me, a remarkable, fast-paced single – featuring clashing piano keys and rapper Kendrick Lamar – which simultaneously melts into inexplicable jazz-synth melodies. The abruptly titled album You’re Dead! has since been revered by many as one of Ellison’s greatest musical products; a record introducing listeners old and new to jazz-fusion that might not be immediately comprehensible, but is certainly invigorating and hypnotic and weird and a damned delight to your ears. Allow yourself this chance to be in the presence of a musical deity.
