Manchester is being treated to a double bill of funk-infused soul of the highest order with this one. Brooklyn-based Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have a growing worldwide reputation as the best on the scene – even those who aren’t familiar with their albums will know the sound of the Daps from Amy Winehouse’s Back in Black album, where producer Mark Ronson utilised them for Rehab and the like. But it’s with Sharon that they truly reach their apex, a band as tight as The J.B.’s led by Daptone Records founders Bosco Mann and Neal Sugarman, with Sharon reaching out to the audience and drawing them in to join her in giving 110% every time. The unmistakable voice of Lee Fields, in support, is backed by another funk powerhouse – The Expressions featuring members of the Truth & Soul crew, who’ve backed up the likes of Aloe Blacc, El Michels Affair, Wu Tang and Jay Z to name a few. A definite sell-out show, then – don’t sleep!
