Burns’ Night is fast approaching, so tomorrow evening Manchester Art Gallery is hosting a celebration of Scotland’s national poet, featuring a tour and whisky cocktails. At 6.30pm, curator Hannah Williamson will lead a tour of the collection A Highland Romance: Victorian Views of Scottishness. The exhibition features popular 19th Century works by Scottish artists, alongside depictions of the country by painters from England. Together, these will be used to explore how ideas of Scotland and its people have changed over the last 200 years. Artworks by JMW Turner, John MacWhirter and Sir David Wilkie are included. The bar will be serving specially created whisky cocktails made with honey from the gallery’s own rooftop hives. Over drinks, visitors can discuss the cultural heritage of our neighbour to the north. Just don’t mention the referendum result.
