The Palaver Festival is an annual collaboration between Manchester University and Contact (pictured). It aims to present stage works that explore the links between language and performance. This year’s festival takes place in mid-April and features two main events. One, Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui (The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui), is a play by Bertolt Brecht. Set in Chicago, this comic thriller tells the story of a gangster’s attempts to control the cauliflower business by ruthless means. Written in 1941, the play doubled as a sly satire of Hitler’s rise to power. It will be performed in German with English subtitles. Friday’s performance is followed by a talk by Brecht expert Professor Stephen Parker. Musical Chitchat, meanwhile, is a contemporary concert exploring the voice as an instrument. The university’s School of Music and Drama will perform an eclectic mix of songs from a cappella choral music to electro-acoustic tunes.
