In 2007, three friends from Prestwich were tired of having to go to the city centre for entertainment, so they launched Shangri La!, a monthly alternative cabaret night, to help put the area on the cultural map. The nights feature an eclectic mix of music, short theatre, film, stand-up, and spoken word. Shangri La! turns 10 years old this month, and there’s a very special event planned at the regular venue of the Carlton Club. The line-up includes Peter Slater, a comic, writer and actor who has appeared in Phoenix Nights, Ideal, and The Detectorists. Also appearing is Pico, a puppeteer with a variety of outlandish characters. Music will come from FRO, an indie band with a prog twist, and The Happy Soul, who combine jazz with rock. The night ends with a disco and a deliberately naff raffle. The venue can easily be reached via the Heaton Park Metrolink stop, or the numbers 90 and 135 buses.
