CREATE is a new film festival that showcases movies about regions of conflict. The aim is to explore creativity in war zones, through the eyes of innovative filmmakers. A project from the award-winning social organisation In Place of War, it features several screening in July at different venues. An event focussing on DR Congo is taking place at St James’ church in Moss Side, and will feature a screening of Virunga. A combination of investigative journalism and nature documentary, the 2014 film focusses on an embattled team of rangers trying to protect a national park from poachers and militiamen. Later in the month, an event created with the help of Manchester’s Syrian population will take place in Longsight. A women-only event, it will feature a screening of The Trials of Spring. This 2015 documentary focusses a young Muslim woman who travelled to Cairo during the Arab Spring to add her voice to the uprising. She was beaten, arrested and later ostracised by her family for her actions.
