This spring, Manchester Art Gallery will be presenting an exhibition that celebrates 1500 years of East Asian arts and crafts heritage. The show will be a progressive journey through time, centering around three main themes: Distinctively Eastern, East Meets West and Future East. Sourced from the cornerstones of traditional art and design in Japan, China, Taiwan and South Korea, Eastern Exchanges will attempt to draw out some of the lineages that have formed over generations of trade and style, including everything from imperial treasures to modern minimalist furniture. Some of the work will be taken from MAG’s own collection – accumulated through the travels and business links of 19th Century industrialists – while others will be more contemporary pieces. Traversing across history, Eastern Exchanges takes the best of ceramics, metalwork, furniture, lacquer and textiles and mixes it together in an exciting blend of imitation and inspiration through time.
