Bob Dylan’s 1966 concert at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall is infamous in rock history. Many audience members were outraged that Dylan, once an avowed folkie, ‘went electric’. One heckler went so far as to scream out ‘Judas!’. Electric 50, taking place in May, is a special gig at Academy 3 that will mark the half-centenary of this notorious event. A series of musicians will perform Dylan’s original set list in full, with their own interpretations of the songs – leaving it up to the audience to decide if they want to recreate the ‘Judas!’ moment. Performers include Jez Kerr of A Certain Ratio, local guitarist George Borowski and indie favourites Thick Richard. Radio DJ Andy Kershaw, who helped identify the infamous heckler, will compère the show. Electric 50 is being organised by Manchester District Music Archive, a crowd-sourced online community. The gig will raise funds for the archive’s future work.
