The Gallery of Costume at Platt Hall, Rusholme celebrates the work of the fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli in a new show that takes in some of her most highly celebrated outfits, including six recently acquired designs. Schiaparelli is considered to be one of the best couturiers of the inter-war period, and her designs helped to push fashion into bold new areas. With clients that included movie stars and royals, she was a contender to Coco Chanel’s throne, and the two women had a lasting rivalry. Schiaparelli was a lover of the Dada and Surrealist art movements and even collaborated with Salvador Dali on a number of clothing designs. This exhibition also includes works by some other well-known designers from the 1930s: Main Bocher, Jeanne Levin, and Bianca Mosca.
