We’re always looking for fun things to do with the family on the weekend – and if those things happen to be free, well, everyone’s that little bit happier. One of Manchester’s finest local free events is Levenshulme Market, running from 10am to 4pm every Saturday behind the train station. Inspired by some of the continent’s finest markets which also act as social hubs and places to hang out (think Berlin’s fabulous market scene) there’s plenty of seating and places to chill out among the independent traders as well as live music and regular kids entertainment. Typical events include free face painting, cycle-powered live music, and chalk murals – created by you and your monsters. The market sells everything from ceramics and flowers to world-class coffee, street food and macarons – and it’s the ideal place to start or finish a day out in this part of Manchester. Why not pop into the market and then stop at Pod Deli (now under careful new ownership), Trove bakery, Thairish Café or Indulge for a meal. Of course Levenshulme is home of antiques too – with the landmark Antiques Village at the heart of the action, housed in Levenshulme’s iconic Victorian Town Hall. For more contemporary art work and crafts, head over to Bankley Studios and Gallery. What with the market and the range of delights on offer in Levenshulme, you’ve got a proper day out in the bag.
