Throughout the winter, the National Trust are hosting a series of night time runs at their properties. The nearest to Manchester will take place at Lyme Park, Cheshire, in late January. There are two courses to choose from: ‘Explorer’ (3km) or ‘Adventurer’ (7km). Both trails are traffic-free and are mostly on footpaths rather than tarmac. Although this is a time trial, the event is open to all, not just seasoned runners. Families are welcome, and entrants can even walk the route if they prefer. The scenic park was used as a key location for the BBC adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. Will Mr. Darcy emerge from the lake to carry you if you get a sprained ankle? The National Trust makes no guarantees. Look out also for Nostell Priory Night Run, near Wakefield, Yorkshire (29 Nov), Longshaw Night Run near Sheffield, Derbyshire (31 Jan 2015) and Speke Hall Night Run, near Liverpool (28 Mar 2015).

Sat 24 Jan 2015, Lyme Park, Disley, Stockport, Cheshire, SK12 2NS, Registration from 4.30pm, event starts at 5.30pm. £7 – £17.50, www.nationaltrust.org.uk.
