The recent fad diet of Americana has left some feeling empty. The bells and whistles of pulled pork, salt beef and burgers bigger than your head can leave one feeling hollow. Thankfully a hot piece of British fodder is back on the menu at Bakerie’s new venture Pie & Ale. Serving exactly that. Pie. And. Ale. Three pies are served up per day – and they even let you know how many of each they have left. When we were there, it was Steak & Stilton, Chicken & Chorizo and Three Cheese, Leek & Onion. All fine choices and very filling pies, served with creamy mash, delicious red wine gravy and mushy peas for a very reasonable price (£5.45 – £5.95). The pies are made on site and the crust is almost as good as the filling. There are six cask pumps with a wide range of ales including the house brew ‘Yippee Pie Ale’ for only £2, a great pint and a great pun. What’s not to love? Nothing, that’s what. Located in The Hive, just around the corner from mother bar Bakerie and adjacent to the sister establishment Bakerie Tasting Store, Pie & Ale is a taste of real Manchester.
