Songs written during the industrial revolution, known as the Manchester Broadsides, are to be brought to life for an event produced by the roots reggae group Edward II.  The band and other artists will perform the newly discovered 19th Century lyrics set to music – reciting their messages of hardship, politics, justice, society and good times –  at a free event to be staged at The Angel Inn, which features in one of the Broadsides, The Soldiers Return. This and the other songs in the repertoire were seen as short-term messages, like the flyers of today, whose aim was to spread the news, promote events or businesses, or highlight political movements and messages. Other performers on the day include Jennifer Reid, Mark Dowding and Chris Pollington, and there will also be food, ales, talks and an art exhibition to evoke the spirit of the age.
