British-Chilean jorunalist and film maker Pablo Navarrete is the founder of Alborada, a Latin American magazine and website covering media, culture and politics around the ever-restless continent. This Saturday sees him foray into Manchester for a double-bill of documentary films from the movie branch of Alborada over at Unison’s North West base and following a daytime seminar event: Latin & Central America 2017 – Achievements and Threat. Up first is brother Roberto Navarrete’s 2014 short, Chile’s Student Uprising, documenting the struggle for a free and state-funded education system, something non-existent in the leftover economic climate which followed Pinochet’s all-too-long dictatorship. Film #2, Hip Hop Revolución, heads north to Venezuela as British activist Jody McIntyre and UK-Iraqi rapper Lowkey spend time with this inspiring grassroots movement exploring changes in the country coupled with the power of music, community and an ongoing spirit of rebellion.
