Gendering Revolution Launch at Irish World Heritage Centre
You might have missed the International Women’s Day celebrations earlier this week, but worry not, because Manchester’s Wonder Women festival is well underway and running through the weekend. One of our event picks for the festival is this exhibition launch at the Irish World Heritage Centre: Gendering Revolution looks at the lives of two wealthy sisters – Constance Markievicz and Eva Gore-Booth – who became hugely influential activists on both sides of the Irish sea The exhibition focuses on the role that art, literature and theatre played in their lives and politics.

Irish Festival Launch at Manchester Town Hall (pictured)
Manchester’s Irish Festival may have started last week, but it kicks off proper with this official launch party on Friday night. The festival is a celebration of Irish art, culture and history, as well as a celebration of the great work done by Manchester’s Irish community. Past guests at these events have included former Irish president Mary Robinson, and the Lord of the Dance himself Michael Flatley. This is the first time the launch event has been opened up to the public, so grab a free ticket while you still can.

The Nest Pre-Party at Eastern Bloc Records
Club promoters The Nest are hosting their third show at hidden art/club space Aatma this weekend, and whilst tickets for it will set you back a tenner, you can still enjoy the official pre-party at Eastern Bloc Records for free. The Eastern Bloc residents will be playing the a selection of electronic, techno and dance treats – the same records that helped make their name as shop. A great way to kick off any night out.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Capping off this incredibly Irish weekend is the St. Patrick’s Day parade. The parade leaves the Irish World Heritage Centre in Collyhurst at midday and will be snaking its way through the city streets towards Albert Square. The theme for this year’s parade is ‘county pride’ and flags representing all 32 counties of Ireland will be present. With an estimated five-figure turnout, this is bound to be an impressive celebration showing that St. Patrick’s is about much more than novelty Guinness hats.
