For any Masterminds, University Challenge fans and Weakest Link devotees out there, Manchester’s beautiful, early 19th century subscription library, The Portico, is hosting a Christmas Quiz on Tuesday night. The specialist subjects that the library holds, like travel, literature and exploration will inspire the nights questions. To make the evening burst with merriment there’ll be mince pies and mulled wine upon arrival to help get you in the festive spirit. There are sets of Portico library Christmas cards and merchandise up for grabs. All proceeds from the night will go towards the upkeep of the library and its public programme of events and open days. So get your team name planned; you’ll need four members per team, preferably with one member who’s the fountain of general knowledge. A chance to relax and make new friends in the impressive gallery and reading rooms.

Tue 13 Dec, The Portico Library & Gallery, 57 Mosley Street, Manchester M2 3HY. Tel: 0161 236 6785, 6:30pm, £8 per person (including mulled wine and mince pies), www.eventbrite.co.uk
