Coming to The Lowry this month, Lost in Thought: A Mindfulness Opera is an innovative new work that melds music, theatre and meditation. The performance lasts four hours, and attendees are a key part of the process. Visitors must refrain from talking and using mobile devices, but thankfully they can visit the bathroom whenever they like. They will take part in various activities, such as walking, eating a communal meal (plus washing up!) and a light yoga session. There will also be long interludes of mindfulness meditation that are aimed at centring the mind. The musical sections will be led by the mezzo-soprano Lore Lixenberg and a small group of musicians, but expect a blurring of the boundaries between performer and audience. The event is aimed at everyone, not just those who have experience of meditation. Lost in Thought was first performed last month at LSO St. Luke’s in London, where it won over a sceptical Guardian reviewer to earn his strong recommendation.
