Manchester-based artist, Maeve Rendle, will be showcasing her first solo exhibition at the International 3 gallery this month. Entitled Gretta’s Gabriel, Gabriel’s Gretta, Rendle’s work takes inspiration from the James Joyce’s 1914 short novel The Dead in which a married couple; Gabriel and Gretta attend an annual party in their native Dublin and endure a night filled with soul searching and consequently self-realisation. The two screen installation helps us take a look at how we have little understanding of the people who are closest to us and their experiences through life and as a result how we are responsible for our own development and growth. Rendle, who was long-listed for the Northern Art Award in 2008, will have the benefit of University College Dublin’s Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith to provide some context in his accompanying commissioned text.
