The Design Gallery at Manchester Art Gallery reopened in 2016, showcasing a striking display of over 100 pieces from 32 designers, conveying a unique selection from the past 50 years of Japanese design. Drawing from the gallery’s own collections, this exhibit will reveal the broad extent of Japanese design that Manchester holds, including: fashion, furniture, lighting, ceramics, glass, metalwork, and jewellery. Located in the refurbished 19th century former Athenaeum theatre space, the exhibit will expose the influences of nature, material, and techniques that have shaped such a discernible style, harking back to the origins of Japanese design, through the more traditional wabi sabi, whilst reflecting a contemporary minimalism design aesthetic with the use of materials such as: steel mesh, polycarbonate and recycled materials.
