A tale of two Queens will rule the West End before arriving at The Lowry. Mary Stuart is a political tragedy and psychological drama about the deadly rivalry between Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots. The play made its debut in 1800s Germany and comes to Salford thanks to a new adaptation by the Almeida Theatre’s Robert Icke. It stars the multi-award nominated actors Juliet Stevenson (Royal Shakespeare Company, Bend It Like Beckham) and Lia Williams (Harold Pinter’s Celebration, The Crown). In a moment of high stakes, the pair decide their royal roles each night on the toss of a coin. Following a sold-out run at Islington’s Almeida Theatre, the adaptation will take to the West End in January 2018 before a limited national tour including Salford. Tickets for the Lowry showings go on sale on Friday 23 June.
