The re-generation of the Ancoats area of Manchester has seen flats bursting from old mills, new builds towering above the rest of the city, and also the big Aldi that supplies the young professionals with their inexpensive eats and drinks. Unfortunately there is a distinct lack of nightlife in the area, with Ancoats residents making the short trip into the Northern Quarter, or, heaven forbid, going to Sankeys. All that now changes as Underland has launched itself, rather fittingly, under the radar with a swathe of top gigs and club nights to make those denizens of Ancoats shop closer to home for their night’s entertainment. Situated in an old abattoir, the space boasts a hangar area for a creative space for artists to exhibit and mingle, and a basement level that is more akin to its raw industrial surroundings. Simply four small walls, a stage and a bar, that lead to intimate, intense shows with great acoustics and an astounding sound system. This industrial complex offers them respite from noise complaints and helps keep the party underground. Scheduled events include a show from three piece rap reggae/rock band Dirty North (Thu 27 Feb), Minus’ Michael L Penman (Sat 1 Mar) and club night witch*unt (Fri 7 Mar). A space that celebrates this city’s industrious past and bright, creative future, Underland looks set to become a Manchester institution.
