This year’s Greater Manchester Walking Festival is now on and dozens of free, organised walks are taking place throughout all the local boroughs. The walks are between one and six miles long, and have varying levels of difficulty. Full details can be found on this website, but we’ve compiled a list of three of the most interesting below:

Canal, Camera, Action | Salford
Starting at Old Fold Pocket Park, Salford, professional photographer Chris Mattison will lead attendees on a short walk (1.5 miles) along the Bridgewater Canal. He will you advise you how to capture great shots of wildlife, and provide general photography hints and tips. This event is aimed at people who are already reasonably experienced with a camera. Rivers Cloughs and Canals | Salford
Salford Council’s ranger service has organised a 5-mile trek through some of the city’s most verdant and wildlife-filled areas. Beginning at Clifton Country Park, the trail will take walkers along the River Irwell to its confluence with the River Croal, and back along the canal towpath.

The Big Bat Walk | Urmston
One of several night-time events, the Big Bat Walk is a two-mile guided tour of Urmston meadows. Attendees will be provided with bat detectors to listen for the calls of various bat species as they hunt for food. Not a strenuous walk, it will be suitable for most people, apart from sanguivoriphobes. Booking is strongly recommended; please see the contact details below.
