September’s One Deck Wednesdays at Electrik challenge DJs to play vinyl from one single record deck. No headphones, no mixing, no turntablism – just music and good taste. Previous selectors include Jerry Dammers, Steve Davis and Belle and Sebastian’s Chris Geddes. With no fancy tricks to fall back on, all audio avenues are explored: expect everything from soul to soundtracks and rock to reggae. Entry is free, and at the end of every month there’s a special guest. September’s star name is a treat for dub soundsystem fans: the mighty Adrian Sherwood. First up, dedicated crate digger Marc Starr will bring Brazilian and Latin vibes to Chorlton on Wednesday 6 September. Next up, Andrea Trout spins the wheel of steel on Wednesday 13 September. Expect a potted history of great music, from ‘80s soul to future funk to a healthy dollop of deep house.Do you dig The Roots or Roy Ayres? Nongi Oliphant will brighten up your midweek on Wednesday 20 September. The Reform Radio regular will delve into an eclectic bag, including South African r’n’b, soul and disco. On Wednesday 27 September, Electrik plays host to British dub legend and On-U Sound founder Adrian Sherwood. He’s worked with the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Lee’ Scratch’ Perry and Blur, and remix credits include Coldcut, Depeche Mode and Primal Scream. Watch a veteran producer dig deep for a selection of influences and personal favourites from across the years.
