Manchester’s roller derby team Rainy City Roller Girls have been awarded a £50,000 grant from the UKRDA (United Kingdom Roller Derby Association) to fund their plan to make their home venue, The Thunderdome, a centre of roller derby. Having relocated to the Oldham location two years ago, the team have already transformed the former Riley’s Pool Hall and Butterflies night club into a roller skating venue and are now preparing to turn it into a Sport England Inspired Facility. Plans for the transformation include a new skate floor, a heating system, tiered bleacher seating for games, toilets and new hire skates and protective gear. With roller derby becoming increasingly popular, League President Cleo Fracture explains: ‘These improvements will allow us to increase our capacity, so we can host bigger roller derby events, create more exposure for our sport, and grow our club.’ For full information on the plans for the venue, visit www.ukrda.org.uk.
