If Steven Spielberg’s latest adaptation of The BFG has not quenched your family’s obsession for Roald Dahl, then fear not. Marking the 100th anniversary of the birth, The Garden at Leftbank (pictured) are bringing three joyful days of family fun. From Tuesday (2 Aug), adaptations of the writer’s work will be screening at their outdoor silent cinema. Such films included Matilda (Tue 2 Aug noon & Thu 4 Aug 4pm), Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (Wed 3 Aug noon & Thu 4 Aug noon) and Wes Anderson’s beautiful animation, Fantastic Mr. Fox. (Tue 2 Aug 4pm & Wed 3 Aug noon). Although these films are Americanized versions of Dahl’s tales, they still retain the darkness and eccentricity that is so synonymous with his work. Yet, it is not only films screenings that will be on offer, family workshops and activities will be running throughout all three days. To appease the hungry bellies there will be food provided for by Bangers and Bacon at the street-food incubator, The Kitchens. It is best to get down early to avoid missing out on the available deck chairs. As Dahl’s characters would say, it should be phizz-whizzing.

Tue 2 – Thu 4 Aug, The Garden, Inwell Square, Spinningfields, M3 3AN. Various times, FREE entry, £5 for headphones for screenings, www.spinningfieldsonline.com
