Musical theatre is overloaded with the same old tired shows that have been doing the rounds since the year dot. But coming to The Lowry later this month is something entirely new – so new in fact that it hasn’t even been written. Showstopper! is a full-length, completely improvised musical that is created from scratch every night. Audience members shout out suggestions for settings, characters etc and the cast work these into songs before your very ears. It may sound like a bit of a risky premise, but the performers are all trained improvisers, and they get consistently good reviews. The musical has been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for seven years, during sell-out runs in the West End, and even as a Radio 4 series. Tickets are selling fast, so don’t delay.
