El Gato Negro tapas restaurant accrued an army of fans in Yorkshire’s Sowerby Bridge. So the news that owner Simon Shaw was reopening in Manchester’s King Street was warmly received by food lovers. Manchester’s Spanish food scene is thriving with recent openings that include Iberica and Lunya, however El Gato Negro will offer something different again. Expect a proper ‘restaurant’ feel over three floors, which will take in a casual dining area and charcuterie counter at street level, a first floor restaurant serving dishes like onglet steak with patatas a lo pobre and whole rack of baby pork ribs with Pedro Ximénez glaze, and cocktail bar at the top, complete with retractable roof. Drinks will be mixed by former Elixir man, Garry Foy, and Spanish wines and sherry will be a draw.

Discounted soft launch by reservation only Fri 19 – Sun 21 Feb (sign up to the newsletter for more information via website), official opening Mon 22 Feb, 52 King Street, Manchester M2 4LY, www.elgatonegrotapas.com
