You may have noticed red lanterns appearing in the city centre, signifying that Chinese New Year is soon to be upon us. Towards the end of January, Manchester celebrates the Year of the Rooster with four days of festivities. There is a heck of a lot things planned, so here are just a few standouts. The hub will be at St. Ann’s Square, where a marquee will be host to street food vendors and traditional music. The Centre for Chinese Contemporary Arts, in the Northern Quarter, is hosting new exhibitions and workshops, and HOME has an evening of short films from Hong Kong. The festival concludes on Sunday at Albert Square with a day of music, street food, stage shows, arts, and crafts. Starting out from the Square will be the traditional parade, which sees a 175-foot dragon wind its way to Chinatown accompanied by dancers, musicians, and acrobats. At its destination, there will be a market and funfair, and the grand finale is a fireworks display.
