Never ones to go down the obvious route when it comes to movie choices, the cineastes of RAD Screenings have chosen a double bill of destructive relationship films for a Valentine’s special. The classic tale of Romeo and Juliet may be a staple of school syllabi and romantic plagiarism but Baz Luhrman’s 1996 version is fast and frenetic and re-imagines the bard’s classic play as a gang land love story rather than its traditional staid setting. Late 1980s fare Heathers completes the one-two gut punch of doomed romances, an even more nihilistic Mean Girls that features a never better Christian Slater and Winona Ryder as high school sweethearts without the sweetness. A great way to evaluate your relationship on the most romantic night of the year with cocktails, food and some classic viewing.
