The ‘funniest man alive’ is currently being remembered through an exhibition based on the collections at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. The quote is by Burgess himself when referring to Chaplin, whose early days music hall performances he covered in latter day articles looking back over the silent film performer’s career. Burgess also referred to Chaplin in his fictional works, albeit briefly, so it is through photography and memorabilia that the story of Chaplin’s days treading the boards of Manchester’s stages is embellished. All is revealed across an illuminating exhibition currently being displayed in the Burgess Foundation’s gallery and library space.
