The flowering of spring may seem a distant prospect during a cold snap, but we’re looking forward to these four forthcoming events, all among the cultural buds set to blossom at Manchester Jewish Museum as winter subsides. The season kicks off with a light touch transformation, as the historic space is turned into a Weimar-era bar and live show exploring Degenerate music banned by the Nazis on Wednesday 27 January (7pm, £10). Banned music included work by Jewish classical composers and the genres of jazz and cabaret. In honour of these artists, singer Peter Brathwaite and pianist Nigel Foster will perform interpretations of songs by Brecht, Weill and pieces by Schoenberg. Read our full preview here.

Mike McGoldrick
The Irish folk and klezmer virtuoso, Mike McGoldrick, is set to expand on his last fleeting performance at the Jewish Museum with this headlining display of his wealth of experience in the field. Expect to hear the full spectrum of Celtic music to mark 20 years since his debut LP, Morning Rory. Many local and emerging klezmer musicians will join the show to create a magical fusion of these two musical styles.

Wonder Women: Written in the Margins
Scheduled as part of Manchester’s Wonder Women festival (3-13 Mar), this celebration combines activities and performances, as well as a featured discussion around the representation of women in the media, organised by Brighter Sound. Stuart Maconie will chair it, while panellists include the PRS Foundation CEO, Vanessa Reed, and Laura Snapes, a music journalist who found herself the subject of a sexist tirade by Sun Kil Moon singer, Mark Kozelek. This thought-provoking evening concludes with the debut live performance of an original piece of music from musician Serafina Steer, inspired by Clare Pollard’s translation of Ovid’s Heroines.

Woody Allen-ish
Lauded by the impressionist Jon Culshaw and Time Out, among others, this stand-up performance by Simon Schatzberger flatters Woody Allen by mimicking his 1960s comedy routines. It’s sold out venues in London and Edinburgh, so don’t wait for the tickets to fly.

Bad Language
Joe Daly (pictured) and his literary accomplices are staging a special live compendium as part of the Museums at Night series, commissioning some of their favourite wordsmiths to create pieces to accompany images and films discovered in the dusty backrooms of Manchester City Council and North West Film Archives.
