The city and its surrounds become a hive of activity this weekend, with large scale events such as Manchester Science Festival, Design Manchester and the Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival all serving up some fine free things to do. You’ll see a nod to one of these below, but for extra inspiration we’ve scoured events for other great freebies.

Manchester Print Fair (pictured)
As part of 2014’s Design Manchester, the Manchester Print Fair returns for its 8th run this Saturday, bringing with it a flurry of books, zines, posters, postcards, t-shirts, towels and more. Celebrating the wonderful world of printed design, Manchester Print Fair has become a key fixture in the local design calendar since its debut in 2011, evident from this year’s move to the larger venue of People’s History Museum. Along with the printed paraphernalia, you can also expect to a series of demos by Design Manchester sponsors GF Smith Paper, including origami, letterpress and screenprinting.
Sat 25 Oct, People’s History Museum, Left Bank, Spinningfields, M3 3ER, 12 – 4.30pm, FREE, www.facebook.com

Vans Classic & Manchester at Twenty Twenty Two
Free nightlife is a rarity in these parts, which is why this Saturday at Twenty Twenty Two looks slightly special. We featured the in-store Vans Classic & Manchester in last week’s roundup, but this time things take a turn for the lively as the brand descends upon the Northern Quarter venue with big names like Levelz, The Mouse Outfit and Werkha in toe. There’s also a special guest DJ and gallery show from VNA mag, making it more than just a step up from the usual weekend getup on Dale Street.
Sat 25 Oct, Twenty Twenty Two, 20 Dale Street, M1 1EZ, 8.30pm – 3am, FREE, www.facebook.com

Stockport Medieval Viking Market
Let your hair down and unleash your inner Norseman with this weekend’s Medieval Viking Market and Fair over in Stockport. Here you’ll be able to experience how people used to live in medieval times by taking a look at the Viking longboats, watching birds of prey and seeing the knights in action as they battle it out in a medieval combat tournament. There’s also a plethora of authentic goods on sale at the medieval market, and for an extra fiver you can grab a ticket for the concerts at St Mary’s Church on Churchgate.
Sat 25 – Sun 26 Oct, Stockport Old Town Market Place, SK1 1EU, 10am – 4pm, FREE, www.facebook.com
