There was something special about this Mancunian band from the outset. They were selling out shows before they’d even released a single, and the live performance of their debut album at 2013’s Manchester International Festival was no doubt a highlight of the festival. Signed to Bella Union (of Beach House, John Grant, PINS fame), their often haunting sounds capture the spirit of Manchester (read: Joy Division) and, with a driving force powered by an ‘overall unhappiness with what we do’, it’s no surprise they bring about a sense of melancholy. The hosting venue has been mostly known to house techno nights and debaucherous after parties (it has a distinctly derelict decor)… could we expect the same from this show?
