The Lowry is all set to launch an innovative new season of ‘Pay What You Decide’ theatre. There will be several PWYD nights from next week until April. Visitors need only reserve a seat in advance, and they will pay only what they think the play was worth at the end of the performance. The aim is to give theatre lovers, and indeed newbies, the chance to see something a bit different without paying upfront for something they might not enjoy. The PWYD events are divided into two groups: WTF Wednesdays will feature cutting-edge plays for people who like theatre that pushes the boundaries. WTF shows include A Machine They’re Secretly Building, which looks at the development of the surveillance state from WWI until today. For the even braver visitor, there are also Hush Hush nights, where the audience will know nothing about the play before they attend.

From Wed 25 Jan, The Lowry, Pier 8, The Quays, Salford, M50 3AZ. Tel: 0843 208 6000, 8pm, pay what you decide, www.thelowry.com
