NOVARS Research Centre, Open-Circuit Salford and Basic Electricity Berlin have teamed up to bring the inaugural Sines & Squares Festival of Analogue and Modular Synthesis to Manchester this October. The very first of its kind, the weekend will be part festival and part symposium, drawing on the expertise of composers, musicologists, performers, synth manufacturers and dedicated enthusiasts to host a series of wholly interactive sessions, set installation pieces, synth-building masterclasses, workshops and live demonstrations in a programme of events that plans to obsessively inform its audience. The festival has managed to secure two of the most celebrated contemporary analogue synth designers to participate: Rob Hordijk of the Netherlands Hordijk Modular and Tom Bugs of the UK’s Bugbrand, who will be hosting two sessions over the weekend in which you can build your very own ‘BugCrusher’ synthesiser. Other guests include critically acclaimed composers and performers working in the field such as Lu Katavist (smalldeath), serial improviser Richard Scott (psi, Basic Electricity), Buchla-master Dan P, David Ross of ini.itu records and John Chantler of Café Oto, who will be involved in much of the proceedings and passing on their unique knowledge, as well as live performances, in a rare programme bursting with diversity and wholly inclusive of audience participation. Anyone with even a passing interest in modern synthesisers will find an abundance of inspiration in the vast array of interactive events across the weekend.
