Everyone loves a day trip, so we’ve put together a few ideas for fun days out near to Manchester. Taking in the best in modern art (Art Sheffield), a family day out with camels (Geronimo Festival) and the coolest, most alternative and DIY music festival since Greater Manchester’s own Sounds from the Other City (Long Division Festival), there’s something for everyone to enjoy, all less than 90 minutes drive away.

1. Art Sheffield Festival
The Art Sheffield festival returns for its fifth edition in April 2016. This year’s event is called Up, Down, Top, Bottom, Strange and Charm and is curated by former Sheffield Hallam art student, Martin Clark, who is now director of Norway’s Bergen Kunsthall. The event is a biannual celebration of visual art and includes free tours, films, takes in venues like Moore Street Substation, and Site Gallery. The programme takes in events, talks, and exhibitions by names like typography-radical, Jean Michel Wicker at S1 Projects and film/video pioneer, Charles Atlas at Sheffield Institute of Arts.
Preview: Fri 15 Apr, Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery, noon-8 pm, FREE. Main festival: Sat 16 Apr – Sun 8 May, various venues, mostly FREE, www.artsheffield.org
