This year’s finest celebration of new music and performance comes in the form of Sounds From the Other City festival. For one day only, musical happenings are curated by Mcr’s best independent promoters and clubs (Now Wave, Faktion, Hey! Manchester to name but three) in delightful and quirky venues up and down Chapel Street. After treating us to acts like Alt J and BBC Sound of 2014, Sampha, this year’s highlights include the Manchester girl band PINS returning from SXSW, alongside The Travelling Band, hot new stars Bernard and Edith (ex Egyptian Hip Hop – see below) plus Neon Waltz and the prodigious acoustic act Eaves, along with a whole host of DJs and electronic artists from ZZZ to Lee Gamble. New venues include a tent in Bexley Square, the historic and huge Maxwell Hall plus new visual fun by art directors the Volkov Commanders and loads of food and drink providers – not forgetting the Festival’s legendary afterparty.

Sun 4 May, various venues, 3pm-late, £18 adv, www.soundsfromtheothercity.com
