August is notoriously a fallow month for comedy anywhere south of Hadrian’s Wall – but there are still a few flying the stand-up flag across the city to lighten these northern skies. Here’s our pick of the titter…

Tim Clark | Jabez Clegg | Tue 6 Aug | 7pm | £5/£3
A veteran of over 20 years in comedy, Clark (pictured) has had numerous successful Ed Fringe stints, toured with Frank Skinner, he was the first Western comic to perform in Beijing and has written speeches for everyone from Gordon Brown to Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock. An eclectic career delivers inch-perfect social commentary.

Big Value Thursday | Frog and Bucket | Thu 8 Aug | 7pm | £5
With the summer selfishly keeping people outdoors, the Frog has decided to lower its ticket prices to entice people to a dark room to watch social malcontents be funny. New Stuff | The Comedy Store | Sun 11 Aug | 7.30pm | £3
Trying stuff out in front of the mirror is all well and good for narcissistic comedians, but it’s always better to test the waters of new bits with a live audience. New Stuff, MC’d by Toby Hadoke, gives established acts the chance to try their new material. It could be gold, or it could be lead. Only one way to find out.
