Bolton Central Library has been recognised with a prestigious accolade at the North West Construction Awards.
The landmark scooped the Regeneration and Conservation Award at the ceremony which was held last week at the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool.
The award recognises the £4.4 million restoration and refurbishment of the Grade II-listed library, delivered by Robertson Construction North West, in partnership with Clear Futures and The Creative Core.
The project transformed the historic building into a modern, inclusive, and multi-use space while preserving its architectural heritage, which proved a key factor in the judging panel’s decision.
Peter McDermott, head judge and professor of construction procurement at the University of Salford, praised the high standard of entries this year, with the judges reviewing how Bolton Library stood out for its community impact, architectural sensitivity and delivery of social value.
The judges described it as a brilliant project that has shown demonstrable impact within the local community whilst maintaining and returning the building to its former glory; and were thoroughly impressed that the project was able to be completed whilst the library stayed live.
The project also generated over £500,000 in social value, including local employment, apprenticeships, and support for community spaces like Brownlow Fold Church of the Nazarene.
The refurbished library now features upgraded children’s and adult areas, a new café, digital facilities, and a flexible central plaza for events and performances – all designed to meet evolving community needs.
Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Culture, Cllr Nadeem Ayub said: “This award is a testament to Bolton’s commitment to regeneration projects that not only improve the lives of residents but also enhance the visitor economy for the town.”
“The new-look library is not just a beautiful space, it’s a hub for learning, creativity and wellbeing.
“We’re proud to receive this recognition and to continue serving the community with forward-thinking developments.”
