You’ve just come back from a smashing week in Barcelona, and Manchester has reverted to its usual gloomy self. Sure, there’s a bit of sun fighting its way through the clouds every now and again, but for the time being that amazing heatwave seems to have gone and left us. Luckily, this week we’ve found some free events to lighten the mood, including the three things that will always be there for you whatever the weather: beer, carnivals and parties.
Beer-tasting world record attempt at The Oast House (pictured)
This one’s by far the best freebie of the week – in fact you’re kind of doing them a favour. The Oast House is trying to break a world record for the largest beer-tasting event and they need some thirsty Mancunians to help them out. All you have to do is show up after work at the convenient time of 6pm, before being given three specially selected ales. All that’s being asked of you is that you raise each glass to your weary lips and take a swig – something many are well rehearsed in. Master of ceremonies Warren McCoubrey will be on hand to explain origin, aroma and bouquet of flavours for the beers, and there will even be live music to entertain as you sip away. The current record stands at 267, which should be an absolute doddle for the folk of Manchester to smash to smithereens.
Wed 7 Aug, The Oast House, The Avenue Courtyard, Spinningfields, M3 3BZ, 6pm start, FREE, email manchesterbdm@theoasthouse.uk.com to participate
Caribbean Carnival at Platt Fields Park
The annual Caribbean Carnival usually resides in Alexandra Park, but due to redevelopment of the area, Platt Fields Park is happily hosting the event this year now that Parklife has left for a larger, more glamorous green space. In celebration of Caribbean culture, expect steel bands, amazing food, floats, crazy costumes, DJs and over 45 dance troupes. This one might not get you free beer, but with calypso, reggae and soca vibes throughout the day, it’s definitely one to cheer you up.
Sat 10 Aug, Platt Fields Park, Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield, M14 6LA, FREE, www.facebook.com/CaribbeanCarnivalOfManchester
Pica Sounds with Oi Polloi at Kosmonaut
The gents at Oi Polloi are a nice bunch, and about a month ago they decided to make their night Pica Sounds a regular deal at Kosmonaut. One month later and they’re back. The boys know how to party, so expect good beer, good tunes and the Northern Quarter’s favourite leisure pursuit: ping pong. Instagram your photos or videos from the night along with the hashtag #PICASPERRY, and the best will win a free pair of their collaboration Sperry’s. Who needs the sun when you’ve won yourself a pair of new shoes?
