Gallery Oldham is set to open a major new exhibition this weekend, shining a spotlight on the storied cultural connections between India and the UK.

Opening on Sat 27 Sep, Indian Perspectives showcases more than 100 works by artists Tony Phillips and Jasmir Creed, exploring how migration, colonial history and cross-cultural exchange continue to shape the identities of both nations through captivating art and personal stories.

Liverpool-born Phillips presents socially engaged drawings that examine the impact of British rule on India while celebrating the creative contributions of post-Independence Indian migration to the UK. Trained at Lancaster Art College, Phillips exhibits internationally and his work is held in collections including London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

London-based Creed draws on her Anglo-Indian heritage to create vivid oil paintings that unpack themes of family history, belonging and alienation. Currently a PhD candidate at the Slade School of Fine Art, she has previously exhibited in London, the North West, China and Turkey.

Councillor Peter Dean, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said:

“Indian Perspectives is a celebration of the deep cultural ties between India and the UK and also a chance for us all to reflect on the stories, traditions and creativity that connect our communities. I would encourage everyone to come along and be part of this shared journey of discovery and celebration.

A free launch event takes place at 2pm on Saturday, with both artists on hand to speak about their work and inspirations. No booking is required.

Indian Perspectives runs at Gallery Oldham from Sat 27 Sep until Saturday 3 Jan 2026.
