Prokofiev’s much-loved comic opera, L’Amour des Trois Oranges, comes to the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) this December, with a new generation of musicians set to bring the iconic tale to life.

Described as a ‘delectable cocktail of satire, slapstick and fairy tale’, the production blends classical tradition with modernist bite, bursting with wit, wonder and joyous absurdity.

When the melancholic Prince shows no signs of recovery from his hypochondria, the King of Clubs is told that only laughter can restore his son’s health, so he tasks his jester, Truffaldino, with throwing a party to lift the Prince’s spirits.

However, simmering away in the underworld is the wicked witch Fata Morgana, still furious from losing a card game to the King’s noble magician and plotting her revenge. She and her servant, Smeraldina, conspire with the King’s ambitious niece to stop the Prince from ever laughing.

Tables are turned, though, when Fata’s mishap at a party makes the prince laugh. In retaliation, she casts a curse on him, causing him to fall madly in love with three oranges.

L’Amour des Trois Oranges comes to RNCM Sun 7 Dec – Sat 13 Dec, offering the perfect festive day out for opera newcomers and seasoned veterans alike. Tickets are on sale now. Book yours using the button below.
