On Fri 13 Mar, the Philharmonia Orchestra returns to The Bridgewater Hall with a sumptuous programme spanning myth, modernity and the marvels of Mexico, led by conductor Marin Alsop and featuring the world-renowned cellist, Alisa Weilerstein.
The evening opens in Mexico with Arturo Márquez’s exhilarating Danzón No.2, a piece whose rhythmic swagger and sunlit lyricism have made it a contemporary classic, before moving into the Manchester premiere of Gabriela Ortiz’s first cello concerto, Dzonot. Written for Alisa Weilerstein, the Grammy-winning composer’s latest work is inspired by the extraordinary landscapes of the Yucatán Peninsula, and unfolds as a vivid, sensuous meditation on place, texture and elemental force.
To conclude, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade carries audiences across the Atlantic into a world of shimmering orchestral colour, as the composer’s opulent retelling of One Thousand and One Nights weaves together romance, peril and fantastical adventure with intoxicating sweep.
