This May, the Hallé make their first appearance at Aviva Studios with ANNO, a powerhouse work of immersion and atmosphere by Anna Meredith that recontextualises Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for a contemporary audience.

Unfolding over an uninterrupted, flowing hour of music, ANNO carries listeners through a full calendar year of sonic transience as Meredith deconstructs and reaseembles Vivaldi’s familiar motifs, weaving spiritual fragments of the baroque masterpiece into her own distinctive electronic language to create a striking fusion of timeless forms and pulsating modern textures.

Designed as a fully immersive experience which heightens the sensation of time’s passing, the work takes place in near-total darkness, with the musicians’ tablets and projected animated visuals by Meredith’s sister, Eleanor, as the only sources of light. .

Meredith is widely recognised for her genre-defying approach to orchestral music, blending classical structures with electronics, pop and experimental sound. At MIF23, she joined the Royal Northern College of Music Festival Orchestra for a standout live performance of her Mercury Prize shortlisted album FIBS, reinforcing her reputation as one of the UK’s most innovative contemporary composers.

Brought vividly to life by the Hallé, ANNO offers a transformational encounter that merges tradition with innovation, inviting audiences to experience the cycle of the seasons like never before.
