This May, Sir Stephen Hough – known around the world as Britain’s greatest living pianist – returns to The Bridgewater Hall to close the International Concert Series with a programme of singularly spellbinding scope and invention.

Beginning with a quartet of Klavierstück – ‘piano pieces’ – from romantic titans Schubert and Brahms alongside the inimitable 20th century luminaries Shoenberg and Stockhausen, the programme moves across captivating climes of poetic intensity and instrumental virtuosity. Beethoven’s magisterial ‘Waldstein’ brings rollicking momentum and flair, before Schumann’s vibrant Carnaval transports the audience through a vivid world of characters, contrasts and exhilarating pace.

The concert concludes on the cobbled streets of Edwardian London with a joyous twist, as Hough turns arranger to present his own unique piano interpretations of songs from Mary Poppins.

Equal parts playful, enchanting and technically peerless, the final show of The Bridgewater Hall’s International Concert Series promises a triumphant crescendo to a showstopping programme that reinforces Manchester’s reputation as a global hub of classical music.
