Next up in our Who You Should Be Listening to… series, we’re shouting about another local favourite, Maruja.

Trying to summarise the genre of the Manchester-based four-piece is a fairly pointless endeavour. The group fuses jazz, post-hardcore, punk, rap and various other styles to create a beautiful, chaotic concoction of sound that flickers between raging intensity, piercing saxophone and emotionally-charged wordplay.

While the group have been garnering a stellar reputation as a live act for a few years now, it was only last September that they released their debut album, Pain to Power, an 8-track experimental epic.

The record is furious, intense and consistently ventures into unexpected avenues, striding effortlessly between genres, keeping you on your toes from the outset…all the more impressive given that three of the tracks clock in around the 10-minute mark. It’s wildly ambitious, properly unique and seriously engrossing. Give them a listen below.
